About Lifeline Gallery

The Lifeline Gallery: Stories of Hope and Recovery is a project founded by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and Link2Health Solutions, inc.  Link2Health is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Mental Health Association of New York City.  L2H is a not-for profit organization that administers the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

With the help of partners SPAN USA and Active Minds, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline launched the Lifeline Gallery in June 2008.

Mission

The goal for the Lifeline Gallery is to raise awareness about the effects of suicide, reduce stigma, connect people to emotional support and offer help. The Lifeline Gallery provides a safe space for survivors of suicide, suicide attempt survivors, those who struggled with suicidal thoughts, and those in the suicide prevention field to share their stories of hope and recovery.

Background

The Lifeline Gallery project came about when producer James L. Brooks (The Simpsons; As Good as it Gets; The Mary Tyler Moore Show) made a donation to the Mental Health Association of New York City to be used by the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to market suicide prevention to youth.  Lifeline approached Oddcast Technologies, inc. - a company that makes an application in which users can easily create online representations of themselves, or avatars, in a very engaging way.  Oddcast had not worked with non-profit organizations prior to this relationship and were excited about using their application to help spread a positive message.

About the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK is a 24-hour, toll-free suicide prevention hotline available to anyone in emotional crisis.  By dialing 1-800-273-TALK (8255), the call will be routed to one of the 132 crisis centers in the Lifeline's national network.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline grant is one component of the National Suicide Prevention Initiative (NSPI), a multi-project effort to reduce suicide led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's Center for Mental Health Services (SAMHSA).
